Breitling Navitimer Service: An Intensive Overhaul for a Chronograph Icon

The Breitling Navitimer. For decades, this chronograph has been the quintessential pilot’s watch, instantly recognisable by its circular slide rule. It is a true horological icon, built for precision in the sky. When an automatic chronograph like the Navitimer comes in for service, it’s a reminder of the intricate engineering that makes these instruments tick.

This particular Navitimer arrived at our workshop needing a full service and repair. Like any complex machine, routine maintenance is crucial—we recommend a service every 3–5 years to prevent premature wear and ensure reliable timekeeping.

Initial Inspection and Fault Finding

As is our standard procedure, we began by thoroughly checking the external condition and functions of the watch.

  • The watch was generally dirty, and it was noted that the chronograph pusher at 2 o’clock was loose
  • Functionally, winding (both manual and automatic), hand setting, and the date change all appeared to be in reasonable order.
  • Crucially, we identified two specific faults requiring component replacement and adjustment: the reverser (part of the automatic winding system) showed clear signs of wear, and the chronograph minute counter was not clicking over correctly.

Full Disassembly and Component Replacement

To perform a service correctly, the movement must be completely disassembled. We start by removing the rotor before securing the movement in a holder specific to its calibre (a high-grade ETA 7750). We then carefully extract the hands and dial.

With the dial and hands removed, we continue the deep disassembly process. This complex automatic chronograph contains over 250 components, and each must be meticulously checked for wear and damage.

In line with our assessment and commitment to reliability:

  1. We replaced the worn reverser
  2. We installed a new mainspring and barrel, ensuring the watch has a reliable and long-lasting power source.
  3. A new chronograph pusher was sourced and fitted to the case.
  4. The chronograph mechanism itself required special attention. The issue with the minute counter not clicking over was caused by a misshapen component. This was expertly adjusted during reassembly, ensuring the chronograph functions perfectly upon activation and reset.

Cleaning, Reassembly, and Final Testing

With the movement fully broken down and replacement parts ready, all components were cleaned using a multi-stage process in our Elma Solvex RM automatic cleaning machine.

Once dried and immaculate, the movement was reassembled. We strictly followed the manufacturer’s technical guidelines for oiling and greasing, using specific products for each friction point to ensure optimal performance.

Finally, the Navitimer was tested rigorously to ensure:

  • Accurate timekeeping within tolerance.
  • An appropriate power reserve.
  • The correct functioning of the chronograph, including the newly adjusted minute counter.

The result is a Breitling Navitimer restored to excellent condition, ready to give its owner many more years of precise and reliable service.
