Breitling Super Avenger Service and Repair
The Breitling Super Avenger. For years, this chronograph has been the bold, heavy-duty choice for those who need a watch that can withstand extreme conditions. It is a true horological powerhouse, built for durability and precision. When a robust automatic chronograph like the Super Avenger comes in for service, it’s a reminder of the solid engineering required to keep these large-scale instruments ticking.
This particular Super Avenger arrived at our workshop needing a full service and repair. Like any complex machine, routine maintenance is crucial – we recommend a service every 3–5 years to prevent premature wear and ensure reliable timekeeping, especially for a watch often subjected to the elements.
Initial Inspection and Fault Finding
As is our standard procedure, we began by thoroughly checking the external condition and functions of the watch.
-
The watch showed signs of regular wear, and it was immediately noted that the screw-down crown was broken, failing to thread properly against the tube.
-
Functionally, while the watch was still ticking, the power delivery was inconsistent, and the automatic winding felt sluggish.
-
Crucially, we identified specific faults requiring component replacement: the reverser (a key part of the automatic winding system) was worn out, and the mainspring. Furthermore, the compromised crown meant there was currently no water resistance capabillity.
Full Disassembly and Component Replacement
To perform a service correctly, the movement must be completely disassembled. We start by removing the rotor before securing the movement in a holder specific to its calibre (the legendary ETA 7750). We then carefully extract the hands and dial.
With the dial and hands removed, we continue the deep disassembly process. This automatic chronograph is famous for its reliability, but with many moving parts, each must be meticulously checked for wear.
In line with our assessment and commitment to reliability:
- We replaced the worn reverser to ensure the automatic winding system efficiently gathers energy from the wearer’s wrist movement.
- We installed a new mainspring, ensuring the 7750 movement has a fresh, reliable, and long-lasting power source.
- A new genuine Breitling crown was fitted. This was essential not just for the aesthetic of the watch, but to restore the water resistance.
- The 7750 movement was stripped to its base plates, ensuring every pivot and jewel was free of old, degraded lubricants before the reassembly process began.
Cleaning, Reassembly, and Final Testing
With the movement fully broken down and replacement parts ready, all components were cleaned using a multi-stage process in our Elma Solvex RM automatic cleaning machine.
Once dried and immaculate, the movement was reassembled. We strictly followed the manufacturer’s technical guidelines for oiling and greasing, using specific products for each friction point to ensure optimal performance and reduced friction.
Finally, the Super Avenger was tested rigorously to ensure:
- Accurate timekeeping within tolerances.
- A full and healthy power reserve provided by the new mainspring.
- Pressure testing to verify that the new crown has restored the water resistance.
The result is a Breitling Super Avenger restored to excellent condition, fully sealed and ready to give its owner many more years of rugged, reliable service.
