Breitling Titanium Avenger Automatic Chronograph – Full Service and Restoration

Breitling Titanium Avenger Chronograph: Restoring a Horological Powerhouse

The Breitling Avenger has long been the definitive choice for those requiring a heavy-duty chronograph capable of withstanding extreme conditions. A true powerhouse of durability and precision, these instruments require meticulous engineering to maintain their performance. When this particular model arrived at our workshop for a full service, it served as a perfect example of why routine maintenance—typically every 3–5 years—is essential for complex automatic movements.

Initial Inspection and Identifying Wear

Our standard procedure begins with a thorough assessment of both the external housing and the internal functions. This Avenger showed clear signs of regular use. Most notably, the screw-down crown was broken, failing to thread correctly against the tube, which completely compromised the watch’s water resistance.

Functionally, while the movement was still ticking, the power delivery was inconsistent and the automatic winding felt sluggish. Our diagnostic phase identified that the reverser (a critical component of the winding system) and the mainspring were worn out and required replacement.

Precision Repairs and Technical Upgrades

To perform a service to our standards, the movement—the legendary ETA 7750—must be completely stripped to its base plate. During this deep disassembly, we identified wear to the barrel and train wheel bridge, specifically surrounding the barrel arbor.

To correct this and prevent future degradation, we performed a technical upgrade: we cut out the worn section of the bridge and fitted a jewel in its place. While this modification is buried beneath the chronograph mechanism and remains invisible to the wearer, it is a much more robust solution than the original metal-on-metal setup. Once adjusted for the correct endshake, this jeweled setting effectively serves as a permanent upgrade, significantly improving the movement’s long-term performance and efficiency.

In addition to this bespoke repair:

  • Automatic System: We replaced the worn reverser to ensure the oscillating weight efficiently gathers energy.
  • Power Source: A new mainspring was installed to provide a fresh, reliable power reserve.
  • Environmental Seal: A genuine Breitling crown was fitted to restore the watch’s aesthetic integrity and essential water resistance.

Cleaning and Final Testing

After a multi-stage cleaning process in our Elma Solvex RM machine, the movement was meticulously reassembled. We followed strict technical guidelines for lubrication, applying specific oils to every friction point to ensure optimal longevity.

The Super Avenger then underwent rigorous testing to verify:

  1. Chronometric Accuracy: Timing was regulated within strict tolerances.
  2. Power Reserve: Testing the new mainspring’s ability to hold a full charge.
  3. Pressure Testing: Ensuring the new crown successfully sealed the case against the elements.

The result is a Breitling Super Avenger restored to peak condition—rugged, reliable, and enhanced by precision watchmaking for years of future service.
