Our fully equipped on-site watch workshop offers a wide range of repairs – from smaller jobs like replacing a battery or glass through to full servicing of the vast majority of brands including Omega, Tag Heuer, Longines, Breitling, and Rolex, as well as vintage watch repairs. In this instance we are working on a Cartier Ballon Bleu. Cartier is a name which really needs no introduction – it is synonymous with high quality and luxury. If you’re interested to learn more about Cartier, a previous blog post has covered some of the history of Cartier.
Cartier Ballon Bleu Watch Repair
The Cartier Ballon Bleu is a modern classic, celebrated for its unique pebble-like case and integrated crown guard. However, beneath its elegant exterior lies a high-precision mechanical heart that requires consistent maintenance to perform at its best. We recently received a client’s Ballon Bleu that was still running but struggling with erratic timekeeping—a common indicator that the internal mechanics are in need of professional attention.
This particular model is powered by the ETA 2892-A2, a widely respected automatic movement. Upon initial inspection on our timegrapher, the readings were inconsistent, confirming that the movement was no longer operating within its intended tolerances. Most mechanical issues, even those that seem significant, can be resolved through a methodical service and the expertise of an accredited watchmaker.
Inspecting the Movement
Detailed inspection of this ETA movement revealed that the essential oils and greases had dried up over time. More notably, we discovered significant wear on the barrel bridge. This type of damage is often caused by excessive hand-winding, which can place undue stress on the components if the automatic winding mechanism is already worn or failing to provide enough power. To rectify this and ensure future reliability, we replaced the barrel bridge, the reverser, and the mainspring barrel complete. It serves as a perfect example of why regular servicing is so vital; catching dry lubricants early prevents the metal-on-metal friction that leads to parts actually wearing out.
The repair process began with a complete disassembly of the movement. Every component was checked for wear and given a thorough pre-cleaning. With the movement fully disassembled and the new parts ready, all components were placed into our Elma Solvex RM automatic cleaning machine. This ensures every wheel and plate is pristine before reassembly. Following the manufacturer’s strict technical guidelines, we then carefully rebuilt the movement, applying specific oils, greases, and treatments to the exact points required to ensure long-term reliability.
While the movement was being attended to, we also turned our attention to the exterior of the watch. We gave the case and bracelet a sympathetic refinish. The goal of a sympathetic refinish is not to make the watch look brand new and characterless, but to carefully remove surface scuffs and restore the original luster of the metal while respecting the watch’s history and sharp lines.
Once the work was completed, the Cartier Ballon Bleu underwent a rigorous testing phase. We monitored its timekeeping across multiple positions, checked the power reserve, and ensured all functions were operating correctly. With the movement now running smoothly and the worn components replaced, the watch has been restored to excellent working order and is ready to be returned to our client. If your own timepiece is due for a service or requires a specialist repair, our team is here to help bring your watch back to its very best.
