IWC Mark XVI Watch Repair and Restoration

On the Bench: Servicing a Modern Classic, the IWC Mark XVI

The IWC Pilot’s Watch series is steeped in aviation history, tracing its lineage back to the legendary Mark XI developed for the Royal Air Force. The Mark XVI, introduced in 2006, serves as a refined, contemporary successor to that utilitarian heritage. With its clean, legible dial and 39mm proportions, it remains a favorite among collectors who appreciate the “form follows function” philosophy of a true tool watch.

The Heart of the Pilot: IWC Calibre 30110

The movement within this Mark XVI is the IWC Calibre 30110. This high-grade automatic movement is based on the ETA 2892-A2. IWC takes this remarkably slim and reliable base and subjects it to their own rigorous specifications, replacing several components to meet their standards for finish and chronometric performance. It is a workhorse known for its efficiency, but like any precision instrument, it requires regular intervention to maintain its integrity.

Addressing Years of Wear

This particular Mark XVI arrived at our workshop after quite some time without a professional service. When a mechanical watch is left to run for years beyond its recommended service interval, the synthetic oils eventually dry out or become contaminated with microscopic debris.

Upon disassembly, the extent of the neglect became clear. The lack of fresh lubrication had led to significant friction within the gear train. We found it necessary to replace all the train wheels, as the pivots had suffered wear that could no longer be rectified by cleaning alone. Furthermore, the mainspring—the coiled strip of metal that provides the movement’s power—required replacement to ensure the watch could once again achieve its full power reserve.

A common point of wear in automatic winding systems is the reversing wheel, which allows the rotor to wind the mainspring regardless of which direction it spins. To ensure the self-winding mechanism functioned smoothly and silently, a new reversing wheel was fitted during the overhaul.

The Restoration Process

To return this pilot’s watch to its original factory specifications, we followed our comprehensive multi-stage protocol:

  • Complete Disassembly: The Calibre 30110 was fully stripped down, allowing us to inspect every jewel and pivot under high magnification for signs of fatigue.
  • Specialist Cleaning: All components were processed through our multi-stage cleaning machine using specialized fluids to remove old, degraded lubricants and metallic dust.
  • Precision Assembly: With the new train wheels, mainspring, and reversing wheel ready, the movement was meticulously rebuilt. We applied specific Moebius oils and greases to the escapement and gear train to guarantee friction-free operation.
  • Calibration: Once assembled, the movement was regulated across multiple positions to ensure the Mark XVI maintains the high degree of accuracy expected of a professional navigator’s watch.
  • Final Testing and Quality Control: Before leaving the bench, the watch underwent a series of functional tests. This included monitoring the automatic winding efficiency on a cyclical winder and verifying the water resistance of the classic Pilot’s case.

With its “engine” now fully rebuilt and its power delivery restored, this IWC Mark XVI is ready to take to the skies—or the daily commute—for many years to come.
