IWC Pilot Automatic Chronograph – Full Service and Restoration
Here at W.E. Clark & Son, we are privileged to work on timepieces from some of the world’s most respected manufacturers. The IWC Pilot Automatic Chronograph is a cornerstone of the brand, revered for its blend of rugged aviation heritage and elegant engineering.
This particular model came into our workshop for a full service, having seen significant wrist time. As is common with many high-quality Swiss chronographs, this IWC is powered by a robust movement based on the venerable ETA 7750 architecture. However, IWC enhances this platform considerably; this version featured custom decoration and blued screws throughout—a mark of its higher quality and finish compared to the standard execution.
The IWC 7750: Diagnosis and Disassembly
We began by inspecting the watch’s functions and performance on the Timegrapher. While the watch was running, it was clear that its timekeeping was inconsistent, and the automatic winding felt sluggish. The initial inspection confirmed that a full strip-down and service were necessary.
Upon fully disassembling the movement, we were able to identify several components that required immediate replacement:
- Mainspring: As standard practice, we always replace the mainspring to ensure the movement has a reliable and consistent source of power for the years ahead.
-
Reverser: The automatic winding system’s reverser was found to be clearly very worn and severely “necked.” This critical part facilitates winding the mainspring regardless of the rotor’s direction of rotation, and its excessive wear was a major contributor to the poor winding performance.
-
Chronograph Clutch: We also replaced the component known as the “Clutch 60s Two Functions.” This was worn, which was affecting the crisp running of the chronograph mechanism.
-
Rotor Bearing: Inspection revealed too much play in the rotor bearing. This excess lateral movement would significantly affect the efficiency of the automatic winding and, crucially, posed a risk of the rotor rubbing on other parts of the movement plate, which could cause catastrophic damage. Replacing the bearing ensures smooth, efficient, and safe winding.

External Works and Reassembly
Beyond the movement itself, the exterior of the watch required attention. One of the chronograph pushers was broken, requiring a full replacement. We carefully removed the remnants of the original pusher and installed the new component. For this delicate but essential task, we relied on our Horia multi-function tool—a great piece of kit designed for multiple tasks such as fitting pushers and ensuring a precise, tight fit that is essential for water resistance.
With all required new parts sourced and checked, the entire movement was cleaned in our specialist Elma Solvex RM automatic cleaning machine. Following cleaning, we commenced reassembly, paying close attention to the delic
ate, custom-finished components and blued screws. We lubricated the watch using the appropriate grades of oil and grease as specified by the manufacturer’s technical guidelines.
Final Testing and Results

Once the movement was fully reassembled, regulated, and cased, the watch underwent its final tests.
We are delighted to confirm that following the full service and component replacements, the IWC Pilot Automatic Chronograph is now achieving excellent accuracy across a range of positions. Furthermore, the watch has successfully passed its crucial water resistance testing, confirming the integrity of the case and its new pusher.
