On the Bench: Restoring an Iconic James Bond Omega Seamaster
The Omega Seamaster has long been a titan of the horological world, first appearing in 1948. However, its status reached legendary heights in 1995 when Omega began its iconic partnership with the James Bond franchise. This collaboration turned the Seamaster into a global phenomenon, creating a legacy of “Bond watches” that remain some of the most sought-after timepieces in the world.
A Pierce Brosnan Era Classic
The specific model currently on our workshop bench is a classic from the Pierce Brosnan era, famously worn in Tomorrow Never Dies. Characterised by its distinctive blue dial and matching bezel, this piece arrived in a non-running state.
Upon inspection, our watchmaker identified the root of the problem. The movement was suffering from heavily dried-out oils and greases—a common issue when a watch has gone too long between services. However, the primary reason for the complete stoppage was found during disassembly: a snapped mainspring. As the mainspring is the engine that provides the watch’s power, its failure meant the timepiece was effectively “dead” until replaced.
The Heart of the Seamaster: Calibre 1120
This particular model is powered by the Omega Calibre 1120. While based on the highly reliable ETA 2892-A2, this calibre features specific Omega enhancements designed to boost precision and durability, including a 23-jewel layout and a three-arm Glucydur balance. It represents a significant upgrade over the earlier Calibre 1109 found in the very first Bond iterations.
The Restoration Process
To bring this piece back to life, we follow a rigorous multi-stage servicing protocol:
- Disassembly & Inspection: Every single component of the movement is taken apart and checked for wear or damage under the microscope.
- Specialist Cleaning: The movement parts are processed through our dedicated cleaning machine, while the case and bracelet undergo deep cleaning in an ultrasonic bath.
- Assembly & Lubrication: The movement is meticulously rebuilt, with fresh oils and greases applied to specific points to ensure smooth, friction-free operation.
- Quality Control: Once the dial and hands are reset and the movement is recased, the watch begins its testing phase.
Testing to the Limits
A professional diver’s watch is only as good as its seals. This Seamaster is rated to a depth of 300m, and we take that rating seriously. Using our Sigma pressure testing equipment—aided by a pressure booster to reach the high levels required—we test the watch using air pressure to ensure it remains completely water-resistant to its original specifications.
With its power source restored and its movement freshly lubricated, this Bond Seamaster is ready for its next mission.
