
We recently had an early Seiko Bell-Matic come through the workshop for a full service and repair. Launched in late 1966, the Bell-Matic was the first central-rotor automatic watch to feature an integrated mechanical alarm. This particular example houses the 27-jewel variant of the calibre 4006A—the earliest iteration of the movement before Seiko reduced the jewel count to 21 and 17 in later production runs to simplify manufacturing and bypass export tariffs.
The Issue: An Uncontrollable Alarm
While the watch was in reasonable cosmetic shape for its age, it arrived with a specific functional fault. Whenever the alarm was activated and its dedicated mainspring was wound, the alarm hammer would immediately trigger and ring continuously without stopping.
Upon stripping down the movement, the cause became clear: significant wear on the alarm disconnecting lever. This component controls the mechanical release and stoppage of the alarm train. Because the engagement tip on the lever had worn down, it could no longer hold back the alarm mechanism under spring tension, allowing the hammer to trip uncontrollably.
The Seiko Bell-Matic Repair Process
1. Disassembly & Inspection
The 4006A is a dense, high-part-count movement with two mainsprings—one driving the wheel train and the other powering the alarm. Strip-down requires careful handling, as the calendar components and alarm setting mechanisms rely on multiple small tension springs. During disassembly, we inspected all pivot holes, train wheels, and lever contact surfaces under magnification.
2. Part Replacement
The worn alarm disconnecting lever was removed and replaced with a correct-specification part to restore exact engagement with the alarm release mechanism.
3. Cleaning & Reassembly
All stripped components underwent multi-stage ultrasonic cleaning to remove decades of dried oil and microscopic debris. Reassembly was carried out to Seiko’s original specifications, applying heavy greases to high-load sliding surfaces in the keyless works and fine synthetic oils to the gear train and escapement pivots.
4. Regulation & Testing
With the new disconnecting lever installed, the movement was put through a series of checks. The alarm now sets accurately, holds tension reliably, and trips crisp and clear when the indicator wheel aligns. Finally, the timekeeping train was regulated across multiple positions to ensure consistent performance on the wrist.
