Seiko Pogue – Full Servicing and Repair

Seiko Pogue watch repair - W.E. Clark Watch Repairs

The Seiko Pogue is a watch that needs little introduction to vintage enthusiasts. As one of the first automatic chronographs ever produced, it holds a permanent place in horological history. However, this particular model gained its “Pogue” nickname from Colonel William Pogue, who famously wore his yellow-dialled 6139 during the NASA Skylab 4 mission in 1973.

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming a Seiko Pogue powered by the calibre 6139B movement into our workshop for full servicing and a new glass to be fitted. This repair was completed by our BHI-accredited (British Horological Institute) watchmaker, Dan Stent.

The Heart of the Matter: The 6139B Movement

The 6139B is a sophisticated, high-beat workhorse. Unlike many modern chronographs that use a modular construction, the 6139 features an integrated column wheel and a vertical clutch system—features usually reserved for high-end luxury Swiss movements of the era.

When this piece arrived at W.E. Clark Watch Repairs, it was showing signs of its age. The chronograph engagement was sluggish, and the timekeeping was inconsistent, suggesting that the original lubricants had dried and thickened over the decades.

The Service Process

To return this space-age icon to its former glory, a systematic approach was required:

  1. Full Disassembly: Every single component of the 6139B movement was carefully stripped down. This is a critical stage for vintage Seikos, as it allows us to inspect the pivots and the delicate teeth of the chronograph wheels for any microscopic wear. Parts can be difficult to obtain and expensive for this calibre, in particular the centre chronograph wheel.
  2. Ultrasonic Cleaning: The parts were put through a multi-stage cleaning process to remove old oils and debris.
  3. A New Power Source: A vital part of this service was the installation of a brand-new mainspring. Over time, old springs lose their “set” and elasticity, leading to poor power reserve and low amplitude. A fresh mainspring ensures the movement has the consistent torque it needs to drive the chronograph complication without faltering.
  4. Reassembly and Oiling: Using specialized Moebius oils, our watchmaker meticulously reassembled the movement. In a vertical clutch system like this, precise lubrication is paramount to ensure everything works smoothly.

Testing and Calibration

Once reassembled, the Pogue underwent rigorous testing. We monitored its performance across multiple positions to ensure the 6139B was beating with the accuracy Colonel Pogue would have relied on in orbit. Finally, the chronograph functions were tested repeatedly to ensure the “snap-back” to zero was crisp and the pusher feel was tactile and responsive.

Preserving History

At W.E. Clark Watch Repairs, we understand that a Seiko Pogue is more than just a tool for telling time—it is a piece of 1970s history. By performing a sympathetic but thorough mechanical service, we ensure this vibrant yellow-dialled classic stays on the wrist and out of the drawer for many more years to come.
