It’s important to have your watch battery replaced by someone who knows what they’re doing for a variety of reasons. A professional watchmaker will have received proper training to look after your watch. In particular, if you have a nice watch from a prestigious brand, it really is worth letting someone with the appropriate training conduct any repair work.
Watch Battery Service and Repair
As part of the battery replacement service we will check the entire watch, use good quality batteries, use the correct type of battery (you’d be amazed how often the incorrect battery is fitted), use correct methods fit the battery (eg. You won’t end up with fingerprints all over the insides of your watch) and use correct tooling (which will prevent damage to the case back and movement). The case will receive a thorough clean and we will replace the back gasket as necessary.
The first thing we do is remove the strap. Once this is done we can remove the case back. This TAG Heuer case back is a screw down variety, so we use a special adjustable tool to carefully twist and remove the back.
Once this is removed we can see the movement itself. The battery is secured in place by a small screw and a retaining bridle, so we need to carefully remove this to access the battery. It is very easy for these parts to go flying across the bench if you’re not careful. With the battery removed we can test the old battery to see if there’s any life in it. We are also able to run diagnostic tests on the movement as necessary, for example if the battery remains at full power but the watch has stopped.
We use quality Swiss Made watch batteries and fit the correct type for the movement. These are carefully fitted using plastic tweezers. With the case back off we can inspect the back seal and replace it as necessary. After the battery is carefully fitted, the movement is given a final inspection before the case back can go on.
With the case back fitted we can zero the chronograph and set the hands, before putting this TAG Heuer watch in our pressure testing machine. This model is rated at up to 200m water resistant and we test it as required – it passes without any problems.
