Disassembly and Diagnosis of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph
In this instance, we are working on a striking TAG Heuer Carrera Automatic Chronograph featuring a distinctive chestnut-coloured dial. This watch arrived with us in need of attention; while it was still running, it was not keeping time accurately, and the date function was completely inoperable.
To find the source of the problem, we must disassemble the movement. This Carrera houses a TAG Heuer-calibre version of the ETA 7750 chronograph. The 7750 is a high-quality, robust, and industry-standard movement used by numerous prestige watch brands. During disassembly, it became clear that this timepiece had not seen a watchmaker’s bench for some time, as the internal oils and greases had completely dried up.

Repair Process and Parts Replacement
Inspection of the movement revealed two primary faults. Firstly, the date change wheel was damaged, with its finger piece broken. This is a common fault on the 7750 movement, typically occurring when the date is manually adjusted while the movement is already in the middle of its own automatic date-change cycle.
To avoid this, we always advise owners of 7750-based chronographs to only use the quick-set date function when the watch hands are positioned in the bottom half of the dial (between 3 and 9).
We also identified a worn reversing wheel within the automatic winding system. As part of our comprehensive service, we replaced both the date change wheel and the reverser. Furthermore, we fitted a new mainspring to ensure the movement receives the consistent power required for optimum timekeeping and a full power reserve.
Case Refurbishment and Pressure Testing
As an Authorised Service Centre for TAG Heuer, we have the privilege of ordering genuine movement parts and seals directly from the manufacturer. Only authorised workshops have access to these original components.
The movement was fully disassembled, pre-cleaned manually, and then processed through our Elma Solvex RM automatic cleaning machine. Once the parts were pristine, we began the reassembly, strictly following manufacturer technical guidelines regarding specific lubricants and epilame treatments.

In addition to the internal repairs, we gave the Carrera case a light polish to revive its lustre while being careful to maintain its original lines. We replaced all seals and tested the empty case in both wet and dry pressure testers to confirm water resistance.
Final Inspection
Once reunited with its movement, the watch underwent rigorous testing on the time-grapher and the Elma Cyclomotion winding machine. We monitored the watch in various static positions to ensure accuracy and verified the correct functioning of all features, including the chronograph and the now-repaired date change.
After a final dry pressure test, this beautiful chestnut-dialled Carrera was ready to be returned to its owner.
