In the Workshop: A TAG Heuer Carrera – Full Service and Repair
Here in the W.E. Clark Watch Repairs workshop, we take immense pride in our status as a TAG Heuer Authorised Workshop. This accreditation ensures that our BHI Accredited watchmaker, Dan, who carried out this repair, uses only genuine manufacturer parts and adheres to the rigorous technical standards required for every TAG Heuer service, whether it’s a F1, Link, Aquaracer or a Carrera.
Recently, we received a classic TAG Heuer Carrera that was due for its full service, but it also presented a very specific, operational fault that required expert diagnosis: the hands were virtually impossible to set, and the crown action felt excessively “clicky” and stiff.

Diagnosing a Setting Fault
The symptoms of difficult, ‘clicky’ hand-setting are usually a clear indicator of an issue within the Keyless Works—the intricate system of components that allows the crown (or winder) to switch between winding the watch, setting the day/date and setting the time.
A full service, which involves the complete disassembly, cleaning, and re-lubrication of the entire movement, is clearly necessary. During disassembly of the watch, Dan was able to identify the underlying issues:
- Worn Motion Work: The setting difficulty was compounded by the fact that the watch was also experiencing a hand-setting fault. Upon inspection, Dan found worn teeth on the minute wheel. When the minute wheel is damaged, it disrupts the flow of power to the hands and can contribute to difficulty in setting the time.
- Damaged other components: To ensure the watch’s power supply was robust for years to come, the Mainspring and Barrel were replaced, along with the Ratchet Wheel. These are essential replacements during a full service to guarantee optimal performance. We also replaced both Reversers – components in the automatic winding mechanism – and the Day Indicator.
The Key to Precision: Day-Date Adjustments
With the main setting and timekeeping components replaced and the movement completely reassembled and oiled, Dan turned his attention to the calendar functions, which required precise fine-tuning:
- Day Indicator Alignment: The replacement of the damaged day indicator revealed that it was sitting slightly uneven with the date display. The cause was traced to a misshapen spring within the calendar mechanism. Dan meticulously reshaped the spring to bring the display into perfect, level alignment.
- Quick-Change Correction: The day quick-set function was still slightly hesitant. This required a subtle, expert adjustment to the minute train bridge to ensure the calendar components had the correct clearance to operate smoothly and reliably when the quick-change is activated by the user.
These highly-skilled adjustments are what separate a simple component swap from a complete, professional restoration by an accredited watchmaker.
Final Stages: Refinishing and Water Resistance
The repair culminated in restoring the watch’s external integrity:
- Light Refinish: A light refinish/polish was given to the case and bracelet, restoring its factory sheen while preserving the original case geometry and sharp edges. As per our clients request we re-used the original glass.
- Seals & Pressure Testing: All old gaskets were replaced with genuine TAG Heuer seals. The watch was then pressure tested to 100m, confirming its water resistance to factory specification.
This TAG Heuer Carrera is now back with its owner, functioning flawlessly—the stiff, ‘clicky’ setting action replaced by the smooth, precise feel one expects from a luxury timepiece.
