Watch Valuations Service

Understanding the true value of a timepiece is essential for both protection and peace of mind, whether the watch is a cherished family heirloom or a recent addition to a growing collection. At W.E. Clark Watch Repairs, our professional valuation service is designed to provide the technical precision and official documentation required by insurers and legal professionals worldwide.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch “Big Box”

Our showrooms in Lewes and Uckfield frequently receive a diverse range of horological pieces, reflecting the broad interests of the collecting community. A recent example that perfectly illustrates the variety and depth of the items we assess is the iconic Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional “Big Box” set.

This particular set is renowned among collectors for its impressive presentation and the comprehensive array of accessories that accompany the timepiece. When this specific set arrives for valuation, it is housed in a substantial, suitcase-style presentation box that serves as a tribute to the watch’s storied lunar history. Inside the padded interior, the set includes two additional straps beyond the standard steel bracelet: a black “NATO” strap for a utilitarian look and a long black Velcro strap designed to mimic the ones worn by Apollo astronauts over their spacesuits. To facilitate these changes, Omega provides a dedicated spring bar tool and a set of spare spring bars.

The set also features a branded Speedmaster loupe, allowing the owner to inspect the finer details of the calibre 1861 movement and the Hesalite crystal. A heavy stainless steel medallion embossed with the Speedmaster seahorse emblem is included as a commemorative display piece, alongside a book detailing the Speedmaster’s heritage and various technical manuals. For a formal valuation, the presence of these specific items is vital, as a complete “Big Box” set represents a much higher market value than the watch alone.

Watch Valuations

Valuations at W.E. Clark & Son are conducted by our two highly accredited specialists, David Clark and Julian Cousins. Both are qualified members of the Jewellery Valuers Association (JVA), ensuring that every report is backed by high-level gemmological and horological expertise. Julian Cousins, FGA DGA FJVA, utilises scientific instruments to provide accurate appraisals for modern and antique watches, while David Clark, FGA DGA MJVA, brings extensive experience within our watch repair service to every assessment, from insurance replacement to probate.

The market for luxury watches is dynamic, with the rising costs of materials and the shifting demand for specific vintage models meaning that a valuation from even a few years ago may no longer reflect the current replacement cost. Most insurers recommend an update every three years to ensure you are not under-insured.

Our valuation process takes place fortnightly on Tuesdays. To have your items appraised, we ask that they are submitted to our showrooms by the preceding Friday. This allows our team to document and prepare each piece for a thorough assessment. For each item, you will receive a detailed written description and a high-quality colour digital image, providing an unambiguous record of your collection. If you are ready to protect your collection, you can contact our Lewes or Uckfield showrooms to discuss your requirements with our team, or utilise our Ask the Watchmaker service to get in touch.
