Work Experience at W.E. Clark Watch Repairs

We firmly believe in supporting the horological industry – hence our support for the British Horological Institute as Business Partners. One of the most important ways we can do this is by highlighting horology as a legitimate career path, and then by supporting young people throughout their learning. Work Experience gives young people a flavour of what it’s like to work in a particular role. In fact, were it not for work experience, one of our watchmakers would not have started working in the jewellery industry, which in turn led to watchmaking. With horology featured year after year as “critically endangered” on the red list of jobs published by the Heritage Crafts Association, it’s now more important than ever for companies to step up to help the industry.

What Work Experience Involved

We were delighted to offer Eliah the opportunity to spend four days with us. Throughout this time he worked in a customer facing role, with our on-site goldsmith and, primarily, in the watch workshop with our Accredited Watchmaker, Dan Stent.

“Eliah was a pleasure to teach the basics of watch repair. He has an excellent attitude and picked up lots of skills very quickly.

We went through some basic horological theory so he understood how quartz and mechanical watches work, before we started on some smaller repair jobs including how to correctly open various styles of watch case and replace watch batteries.

I’d throw in a few challenges here and there, such as refitting the second hand onto a watch. This is something which is straightforward when you’ve done it thousands of times, but it requires a steady hand, patience and care.

By the end of the week we disassembled a mechanical movement so Eliah was able to take the theory we discussed and see it in action. We then covered the basics of reassembly and oiling. Eliah was able to successfully oil a lever escapement and a cap jewel, as well as the majority of the rest of the movement. Once the watch was rebuilt (and adjusted for correct timekeeping of course) it was Eliah’s to keep.

Thanks for bringing an excellent attitude with you into the workshop and best of luck in the future”.

working in the watch workshop

As well as the time he spent in the watch workshop, Eliah worked alongside our on-site jeweller (responsible for some incredible watch bracelet restoration work). Here he was able to learn some basic silversmithing techniques and even made his own silver ring. He also spent time dealing with customers and examining gemstones with qualified Gemmologist & Valuer, David Clark.
