Bridging the Gap: Workshop Expertise Training for Our Service Team
For us at the W.E. Clark Watch Repair Workshop, our commitment to technical expertise is paramount. The precision of our craft starts with the knowledge of every team member, connecting the service floor to our highly-skilled horologists in the on-site facility in Lewes—an official TAG Heuer Authorised Workshop.
To reinforce this standard, our customer service teams from Uckfield and Lewes recently underwent a specialised training initiative. Dan, our BHI accredited watchmaker, guided the session, aiming to give our front-of-house staff a practical and detailed comprehension of the complex horological processes conducted daily in our repair facility.
From History to Mechanical Fundamentals
The training session commenced with an engaging, albeit brief, overview of the history of timekeeping and the evolution of watch design. This essential background allows our staff to fully appreciate the historical significance and craftsmanship of the pieces entrusted to our care.
Following this, Dan expertly demystified the core mechanisms of a watch. A key segment involved detailing the fundamental difference between a spring-driven mechanical movement and a battery-powered quartz movement, crucial knowledge for confidently explaining various service and maintenance needs to our clients.
Workshop Insights: A Practical Demonstration
The most informative element was the practical, hands-on experience provided directly in the workshop setting. Our team familiarised themselves with the essential tools of the horology trade, including:
-
Safe Case Opening: Staff practised the careful and safe removal of different case back types (screw-down, snap-on, etc.). This vital skill demonstrated that even simple tasks demand specialised tools and utmost care to prevent aesthetic damage.
-
Precision Adjustments: Dan illustrated various minor adjustment techniques used in daily routine repair work, underscoring the level of precision and patience mandatory for every task, no matter how small.

The Test of Precision: Refitting a Second Hand
The final segment presented a genuine challenge to the team’s concentration and dexterity: re-attaching a loose second hand onto its tiny central pinion. This requires not only a specific tool and absolute stability, usually under high magnification, but it perfectly illustrates the micro-scale precision of professional watchmaking, where tolerances are measured in fractions of a millimetre.
This continuous, specialised training guarantees that every member of the W.E. Clark Watch Repairs service team is fully equipped to provide the most informed and accurate advice regarding your treasured timepiece, solidifying our reputation for service excellence from reception to repair bench.
